According to scientific evidence, it has been at least four thousand years since people began to keep cats as pets in their homes. These domesticated felines first appeared in ancient Egypt. Egyptians used cats to control the population of rodents and protect some of their common sources of food. These cats were looked upon as gods and goddesses and were even mummified after they passed away.

From that point on, people began to keep cats as pets in many different countries and regions across the world. Most cultures fell in love with the cat, but soon this love started to fade. In the Middle Ages in Europe the domesticated cat began to get a bad reputation.

The Middle Ages was a period of suspicion about people and cats. At that time, most people believed that cats were evil and unlucky. It was also a popular belief that cats were associated with witches. As a result of these negative feelings toward felines, many of the creatures were killed during this time. A great deal of historians believe that the killing of domesticated cats lead to a larger than normal rodent population, which was a factor in the spread of the bubonic plague.

The cat’s bad reputation during the Middle Ages may have had something to do with the many myths that surround the domesticated cat population. One widely spread piece of folklore is about cats and babies. It is said that cats will suck the air out of the mouth of a newborn baby and the baby will die. Another popular myth is that cats have nine lives; this myth may be rooted in the feline’s durability, lack of instinct, and its ability to survive certain dangerous situations that many other animals would not survive.

By the 18th century, the household cat had become one of the most popular pets worldwide. Currently, it is thought that there is at least one domesticated cat in nearly every household in the United States alone. In 1996 the population of cats in the United States was estimated at over sixty eight million. These pets are often looked at as members of the family and are definitely treated with great respect. Cat lovers adore pampering their pets and there are many products out to help them to do so. Some of the most popular cat products include: cat furniture, cat toys, cat litter, medical supplies, grooming products, cat blankets, and cat beds.
